N.Ušakovs: during heavy snowfalls car drivers will be allowed to use public transport free of charge

"Starting from Thursday, December 13, during heavy snowfalls Riga car drivers will be allowed to use public transport free of charge after presenting the car’s registration certificate," Riga Mayor Nils Ušakovs said. "This privilege is being introduced to reduce traffic intensity and jams in heavy snowing conditions, as well as to make the operation of road maintenance equipment easier".

Registration certificates of other car owners, e.g. leasing companies, relatives or other persons, will be also valid.

The municipality will inform about the expected heavy snowfalls on the day before.

Information about when the privilege is introduced/cancelled will be available at http://sniegs.riga.lv/www.riga.lv, as well as in media.

With reference to the weather forecast, the Transport Department of Riga City Council informs that heavy snowfall is expected to start in Thursday’s night and continue until the afternoon. According to the weather forecast, the thickness of snow cover may increase by 6 – 10 centimetres. Therefore, tomorrow residents will be allowed to use public transport free of charge after presenting the registration certificate of a car.

The municipality calls on Riga residents not to use their personal transport during heavy snowfalls and to take public transport instead. When using personal transport, drivers should take into account that going by car will take them 15-20 more than usually, so they are urged to plan their route in advance.
